A study published in Blood on November 5, 2024, reveals how socioeconomic factors influence access to allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients. The findings indicate that patients from lower-income areas, those with lower education levels, and households receiving government assistance were significantly less likely to undergo allo-HCT. However, socioeconomic status did not appear to impact survival outcomes for those who received a transplant.
These results emphasize the need for policy changes and targeted interventions to improve access to allo-HCT. Addressing financial barriers, improving health literacy, and strengthening support systems are crucial steps to ensuring equitable treatment opportunities for all AML patients.
A special thanks to all the researchers and clinicians dedicated to improving access to life-saving treatments.
