Editor’s note: ESMO ASIA 2023 inaugurated its opening session, heralding a landmark event in the world of oncology. Hosted in the prestigious Hall 406, this congress brings together the brightest minds in cancer research and treatment, uniting a global community in the fight against this challenging disease. The opening ceremony featured the traditional Dragon Dance, symbolizing prosperity and health. This cultural performance underscored the congress’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity, setting a vibrant tone for the event. After the opening address, ESMO also commended society in Asia for their outstanding contributions in promoting international cooperation and exchanges. Dr. Donglu Zhao accepted the certificate of appreciation on behalf of the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology (CSCO).

Opening Address
Dr. Andrés Cervantes, President of ESMO, opened the session with a powerful keynote lecture. His address, not only set the stage for the congress but also underscored the critical importance of international collaboration in advancing oncology research and patient care. He also said that Asia is an important part of the global fight against cancer. Asian oncologists are crucial to improving the survival time and quality of life of cancer patients in Asia and around the world. We hope to develop together with Asian oncology professionals and share the latest scientific and clinical advances in the field of oncology.

Scientific Co-Chairs Highlight the Congress Agenda
Dr. Brigette Ma, Scientific Co-Chair of the 2023 ESMO ASIA Congress, introduced the highlight projects of this conference, including:
New insights into the multifaced applications of liquid biopsies: from early detection and management of cancer to underpinning national screening programmes;
Asian studies in the expanding role of real-world data in oncology to obtaining insights on (rare) immune related toxicities;

A special session from 09:45 AM to 10:05 AM was dedicated to recognizing the endorsing society representatives. This segment highlighted the collaborative spirit of the congress and expressed gratitude to the societies and contributors who have played a crucial role in bringing this event to fruition.
Dr. Andrés Cervantes, Chairman of the ESMO Congress, issued certificates of appreciation to oncology societies in Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Iran and other Asian countries. Dr. Donglu Zhao, member of the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology (CSCO) and Harbin Institute of Hematology and Oncology (HIHO), accepted the certificate of appreciation on behalf of CSCO.

Highlight sessions like the Aswell Women in Oncology Forum on gender equality, discussions on growth development in the Asia Pacific region, and policy debates for cancer prevention are set to generate insightful dialogues and action plans.
