At #EAU25, Dr. Rodrigo Ledezma and colleagues presented the first-in-human results from the ASTRA study, evaluating robotic-assisted Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (RoLEP) using the Beacon Platform.
This novel robotic system was developed to address one of HoLEP’s main barriers, its steep learning curve—by assisting with surgical navigation, landmark recognition, and safety monitoring. The Beacon Platform tracks applied force to protect critical anatomical structures and facilitates improved spatial orientation.
In this early feasibility study, 15 patients with prostates averaging 55 cc underwent RoLEP. All procedures were completed without conversion or intraoperative complications, and only one patient reported urinary incontinence at 30 days. No reoperations or transfusions were needed.
The Beacon Platform shows promise in standardizing HoLEP, supporting surgical training through tele-mentoring, and potentially making this gold-standard BPH treatment more widely accessible.
Congratulations to Dr. Ledezma and co-investigators Cristian Trucco, Ernesto Mohr, Tomas Olmedo, Gaston Astroza Eulufi, Pablo Marchetti, Dr. Fernando Gómez Sancha, and Peter Gilling for this innovation.
