Editor's Note: On July 5th, the 17th Beijing Hematology Academic Annual Meeting, hosted by the Beijing Medical Association Hematology Branch, concluded successfully in Beijing. This year's meeting featured innovative and unique formats and rich content, providing a platform for participants to share cutting-edge advancements and experiences. It also showcased the original research achievements in the field of hematology in Beijing. "Oncology Frontier - Hematology Frontier" invited Professor Qian Jiang, the current chair of the Beijing Medical Association Hematology Branch, the main organizer of this conference, and a professor at Peking University People's Hospital, to share the highlights and unique aspects of the meeting and to discuss its far-reaching impacts on the future.

Professor Qian Jiang: The Beijing Hematology Academic Annual Meeting, hosted by the Beijing Medical Association Hematology Branch, is held every two years. This meeting was the first large-scale offline annual meeting since the pandemic. Since the last annual meeting, we have focused on sharing and exchanging the work results of doctors in Beijing and their presentations at international conferences. This year’s annual meeting continued with this concept, inviting former chairman of the Beijing Medical Association Hematology Branch, Professor Daobin Zhou from Peking Union Medical College Hospital, and Professor Xiaohui Zhang, Deputy Director of the Beijing University Institute of Hematology and Peking University People’s Hospital, along with many other experts and scholars from Beijing, attracting over 300 practitioners in the field of hematology.

Highlight 1: Focusing on Clinical Concerns and Gathering International Experience

This year’s annual meeting specially invited Professor Rüdiger Hehlmann, founder and current chairman of the European LeukemiaNet (ELN), to introduce ELN’s mission and goals. As an authoritative expert in the field of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and the main advocate and author of multiple editions of the ELN guidelines, Professor Hehlmann provided a detailed explanation of his professional philosophy and an in-depth analysis of the strengths and areas for improvement in the current version, offering valuable industry insights and forward-thinking perspectives to the participants.

Professor Robert Peter Gale, editor-in-chief of the authoritative hematology journal “Leukemia,” gave an in-depth lecture on “How to Conduct High-Quality Scientific Research and Publish Successfully.” This topic was particularly popular among attendees, especially young doctors and medical graduate students. From the perspective of a journal editor-in-chief, Professor Gale systematically explained the writing techniques of high-quality research papers, the types of articles preferred by journals, current research hotspots, and the key points in writing a cover letter. He also provided targeted solutions and valuable advice for the difficulties and obstacles Chinese doctors might encounter in paper writing.

Professor Xiaohui Zhang also shared valuable insights on how to write applications for the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). With his extensive experience in writing applications and deep academic background, along with his valuable experience as a first-round reviewer for the NSFC, Professor Zhang elaborated on the key elements, precautions, and common pitfalls in writing applications. He particularly emphasized that details determine success and provided highly referenceable strategies and techniques for writing applications by sharing successful and unsuccessful cases.

Highlight 2: Establishing Unique Sections to Showcase Beijing’s Excellence

As a unique feature of this conference, the sections “Voice of Beijing” and “Beijing Masterpieces” were highly anticipated. The former featured selected oral presentations from Beijing scholars at international conferences in the past six months, while the latter gathered high-impact factor (IF>10) or representative works from various hospitals in Beijing over the past two years. Together, these sections showcased the outstanding achievements and expertise in the field of hematology in Beijing. Additionally, these sessions featured five-minute refined presentations that captured the essence of the research, accelerating the collision of ideas and efficiently showcasing the broad research outcomes of peers, promoting deep exchanges.

Notably, many first authors of these oral presentations and high-impact publications are young doctors, including graduate students. Publishing research results not only adds luster to their graduation and resumes but also allows them to stand before the public to showcase their years of research efforts, thereby gaining a sense of professional achievement and academic recognition. Having experienced the early stages of our careers ourselves, we understand the weight of such honor and encouragement. Therefore, we feel gratified and proud to provide such a provincial and municipal academic presentation platform for the younger generation.

Future Insights: Innovation Promotes Exchange, Exploration is Endless

After the agenda of this meeting was announced, it garnered attention from industry peers. The core of publishing articles lies in sharing research results and scientific discoveries. This model, which combines theoretical training and journal publication case studies, provides an excellent platform for scientific researchers to showcase and learn, while also converging the scientific research results from Beijing, facilitating regional academic exchange and cooperation. We hope that through this exploratory model, we can further stimulate the vitality of scientific innovation and jointly promote the prosperity and development of the discipline.

It is worth mentioning that since the Beijing Hematology Academic Annual Meeting is held every two years, when collecting high-impact papers and oral presentations from international conferences over the past two years, considering the duration of the conference, we had to integrate and compress the content, which may have resulted in some high-quality articles not being fully presented. Therefore, we actively sought the opinions of many attending experts and scholars. They suggested increasing the frequency of the conference to once a year to fully showcase research results and deeply discuss academic issues of interest. The organizing committee will seriously consider whether adjustments are necessary.

Overall, this conference explored new models of academic exchange. In the future, we will actively adopt suggestions from various parties, continuously optimize the form and content of the conference, and provide a higher quality and more efficient academic exchange platform for the vast number of scholars.
