In a recent editorial published in the Journal of Hepatology (April 2025), Prof. Heiner Wedemeyer (Hannover Medical School) a leading voice in hepatology joined Niklas Luhmann in reflecting on more than a decade of interferon-free HCV treatment and the global efforts toward elimination.
Their message is clear: while therapeutic advances have made hepatitis C curable, we are not on track to meet WHO’s 2030 elimination goals. With only 21% of infected individuals treated since 2013, and most of those in a handful of countries, viral hepatitis remains an urgent public health challenge.
Prof. Wedemeyer highlights the need for stronger national strategies, improved access to affordable treatment and diagnostics, and inclusion of hepatitis services in universal health coverage.

A call to action for all of us in the field: HCV elimination is possible but only if we prioritize it.
